Winter Pinks ft. Rent the Runway

In October 2019, I decided to try Rent the Runway. For those of you that don’t know what RTR (Rent the Runway) is, it’s a clothing rental service. You’re probably like, “Soooo, what’s the point?” Well, there’s three different ways to rent. The first is a “one time rental.” If you have an event to attend (think weddings, formals, galas, etc…) you can rent a designer outfit for a cheap price. You pick your size, get it shipped to you before the event, wear it to your event, and ship it back! They take care of dry-cleaning and shipping costs. If you’re only going to wear it once, what’s the point of purchasing a permanent item just to sit in your closet? 

The second way to rent is called the “RTR Update” plan. This plan is for those that are looking to freshen up their wardrobe monthly, but only with a limited number of pieces. Each month, you can choose up to 4 pieces to rent. This is perfect for the colder seasons if you’re looking to try a new winter jacket, or if you want to add a few fun sweaters to your closet. 

The third way to rent is the “RTR Unlimited” membership. This is the plan that I have. You can rent an unlimited number of pieces for your closet, (4 at a time). This plan works best for my lifestyle for a few reasons… I live close to the RTR flagship store in New York City, I work in an industry where I can be fun and creative with my outfits, and I am constantly sharing my looks on my blog and social media. Being close to the store means that I can pick my rental pieces and receive them within 24 hours, and when I drop off my pieces to get sent back (at my local UPS store), they’re received within 24 hours and again, I’m able to pick my next pieces. Each week I can have anywhere between 4-8 new looks to style in my wardrobe. If I didn’t live in such close vicinity to a store, I’d have to wait 2-3 (or more) days to receive my items-which wouldn’t be worth the money. So far in the month of January, I’ve already rented/worn 14 pieces and it’s only the 16th of the month. Soooo, that means (as of right now), each piece averages to around $11. And we’re not even finished with the month! It just makes sense for the busy lifestyle that I live.

As a blogger, I’m always looking for new pieces to feature on my blog. If I had to purchase a brand new outfit every time I wanted to create a new blog post, I would have NO room in my apartment and $0 to my name! Living in the NYC area means that my space is limited. I don’t even have a full CLOSET right now so I have to be smart with the amount of clothing that I can fit in my dresser and put on my clothing rack.

Financially, RTR has definitely helped me stay on top of my funds. I no longer go to the mall to browse stores. I know that each month I pay ONE fee and I am able to wear as many pieces as possible. Now instead of online shopping, I browse through the new selections on RTR and see what pieces they have that I can rent next.

Plain and simple, I love renting clothes because there’s no commitment. I’m always stepping out of my comfort zone with pieces that I wouldn’t normally buy, because I know after a wear or two, I can ship it right back.

That’s how I feel about this gorgeous pink cardigan/jacket from J.Crew. I rented it in my most recent order and absolutely loved it. I would NEVER purchase this item for a few reasons… First of all, it’s not a neutral color. I couldn’t style this in a ton of different ways so it wouldn’t be worth paying the retail price, which is $168.00. That brings me to my second reason…By wearing this one piece, I’ve already worn ONE item that costs more than my monthly fee for unlimited clothing. Some might argue that you could shop for clothing at Marshalls, TJ Maxx, or Forever 21 for just as many items but for less prices. While I agree that this is true, those items may not be the best quality. The odds of those pieces lasting a full season or more is pretty slim, so in the long-run you’re saving money. (Don’t get me wrong, I love Marshalls AND TJ Maxx, but I just don’t buy clothing in “bulk” there like I used to!). 

This pink cardigan was the perfect statement to brighten up basic black jeans and a simple grey sweater, both of which are from H&M. The majority of the clothing that I own is full of basics now: neutral sweaters, black and blue jeans, neutral tops, etc.. I love being able to pair the items that I rent with the basics that I own.
