Transitional Capsule Wardrobe

A goal of mine in 2022 was to consume less and simplify my wardrobe. Ultimately, I wanted to turn my wardrobe into a seasonal capsule collection: a carefully curated selection of clothing pieces that can be paired together in an endless amount of combinations. Regretfully, over the years I have purchased pieces that were far too trendy or pieces that could only be worn for a limited number of occasions. The problem with this? Season after season, I’ve found myself wanting to purchase new pieces which then results in the constant state of purging my closet, spending money, and ultimately contributing to the overproduction and overconsumption crisis in the fashion industry. I still find myself reaching for punchy prints and bold colors once in a while, but the ultimate goal is to keep my everyday wardrobe timeless, versatile, and wearable for at least 2 seasons.

My Tips for Creating a Capsule Collection

Define Your Style in 3 Words 

Over the years, I’ve noticed what colors, textures, and silhouettes I prefer so when I’m shopping, I know exactly what will and won’t work. I define my style as feminine, modest, and classic. Before purchasing anything, I always make sure it fits in at least two of those categories.

Investment Pieces

Although overtime a capsule collection will save you money, you may need to spend more upfront. Higher quality clothing pieces are going to cost you more than trendier pieces, but they’ll last year-after-year… which is the goal. Although we’re currently in the midst of  a heat wave in Boston, I know the fall temperatures are just around the corner. Plus, the few weeks of that awkward, in-between seasons, “what is appropriate to wear?” time will arrive even sooner… Perhaps by mid-September?
