A September Refresh

Just a few days ago, Ant and I woke up early to enjoy a September beach morning. I had a few campaigns to photograph, we finally had a weekend with no plans, and the bonus? Not having to pay for beach parking since it’s now considered the “off season.” HUGE perk if you think about it, especially since September still seems to be around 80°. We arrived earlier than most, but slowly watched as the parking lot filled with young families and the ocean with adventurous surfers.

For me, September is such a refreshing month. It feels like an early new year… probably because it marks the beginning of the “school year.” Though I’m no longer a student, I feel like September calls for it’s own version of ‘spring cleaning,’ a new set of priorities, and even allows a fresh start. I recently shared a few new priorities of mine (read here) and I plan to carry this list with me throughout the month, and beyond. Though, I do have a seasonal checklist that I’m also creating, for the month. This isn’t my fall bucket list, but it is just a few changes I’m making this month to allow me to embrace the season in full.

Embrace Seasonal Flavors

This is a given, especially with all of the delicious flavors that are associated with fall. But, I’m thinking less about the new pumpkin flavor of coffee or the apple streusel for breakfast and more about seasonal fruits, vegetables, and recipes that are filled with nutrients that your body craves during the time of the year. I usually find myself craving apples, carrots, onions (though Ant will tell you I enjoy onions year ’round… he despises them!), garlic, leafy greens, soups, and berries with oatmeal. If you’re interested in this topic, I really enjoyed this article about the science behind seasonal cravings!

Spend Time Outside

I try my best to spend as much time outdoors as possible during September, October, and November. I personally love the winter, too, so getting out in frigid temperatures isn’t something I dislike… But I know for many, it’s awful. If you’re not a fan of cold weather, I encourage you to spend some more time outside, before the chill in the air arrives. Not only is the foliage a beautiful way to enjoy the change of the season, but come January, you’ll be missing your chance to enjoy the fresh air.

Fragrances

Whether you have a perfume that feels fitting or a new candle you often light during this season, embrace it all. Since I work remotely, I rarely wear fragrances but I do love my candles. So, this time of the year I’ll reach for cozy, home-y scents like pumpkin, apple, cinnamon, or maple. I usually swap out our kitchen and bathroom hand soap for something seasonal, too.

Is there anything you do at the beginning of each season to help you adjust to the change? Let me know in the comments below. xo
